Engels state education contest winner in CDA national competition

Peter Engels, a former student from St. Edward Catholic School in Minneota, gave MN CDA and Court St. Joan of Arc #1291 a winner in national competition. He entered the competition as an eighth-grader from St. Edward. Engels placed third in the Music, Section II division in the National CDA Education Contest. His musical composition with lyrics and recording is titled "Life is Good."

He was the only Minnesotan to garner a win in the National CDA competition. He performed his music for the local Catholic Daughters following Mass at their Oct. 14 meeting. Engels was then honored and received a check, certificate and ribbon from National CDA. He is the son of John and Amanda Engels and is a freshman in Minneota High School this year.

Emmaus Retreat offered Nov. 8-10

An Emmaus Retreat is being sponsored by Holy Redeemer Church Nov. 8-10. All women of Holy Redeemer Parish and surrounding Catholic communities are invited to attend. Emmaus Retreat is a weekend to listen, relax and enjoy the presence of God. Any sharing is optional and remains confidential. The cost is $100 and includes room, board and transportation. Pro-life pancake breakfast Sunday in Carlin Hall

A pro-life pancake, egg and sausage breakfast will be from 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Sunday in Carlin Hall, Holy Redeemer Church basement, Marshall, sponsored by Birthright of Marshall. Everyone is welcome. A freewill offering will be accepted.

Scandinavian Fest Nov. 2 in Cottonwood

St. Lucas W.E.L.C.A. Scandinavian Fest is from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, at St. Lucas Lutheran Church, 4232 170th Ave., Cottonwood (U.S. Highway 59 and Yellow Medicine County Road 2). The event will include a meatball dinner - cost is $8 for adults and $5.50 for children. Take-outs will be available. A bake sale will also take place along with cards, napkins and dishcloths for sale.

Bone-in-ham dinner Sunday in Balaton

A bone-in-ham dinner will take place from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Sunday at the Balaton Community Center in Balaton. The menu includes ham, escalloped potatoes, corn, coleslaw and dessert. The cost for adults is $8 and for children 10 and younger, $3. The dinner is sponsored by Balaton United Methodist Church.

Trunk or Treat Oct. 31 at St. Stephen Lutheran Church

St. Stephen Lutheran Church in Marshall invites the community to its second annual "Trunk or Treat" on Halloween, Thursday. Visit the church parking lot, 1301 S 4th St., Marshall between 5:45-7 p.m. Several vehicles will be decorated for Halloween at one end of the parking lot, and confirmation students will be handing out candy from each trunk.

Children are encouraged to come in costume, as well as parents. Bring a non-perishable item for the food shelf as a donation to be collected as you enter the parking lot. For more information, call 537-1516.
