PREP SPORTS ROUNDUP: Eveleth-Gilbert sinks Marshall in OT at Schwan Cup

BLAINE - Alicia Williams scored 53 seconds into overtime as Eveleth-Gilbert defeated Marshall 3-2 in the quarterfinal round of The Schwan Cup White Division Tournament at the Schwan Super Rink on Monday.

Williams took a pass from Ashleigh Seabrook before shooting it past Tigers goaltender Morgan Morrill, who made 30 saves on 33 shots in the game.

MHS took a 1-0 lead in the first period on a goal from Hanna Peterson, who was assisted by Teegan Wyffels and Lizzie Archbold at the 9:48 mark.

Wyffles scored an unassisted goal with 3:15 left in the second period for a 2-0 Tigers lead.

But Eveleth-Gilbert's Sam Mugge stole Marshall's momentum 13 seconds later with a goal on a pass from Rachael Jackson.

With MHS leading 2-1 after 34 minutes, Hannah Larson tied the game 2-2 with an unassisted goal 1:27 into the third period.

Neither team scored until Williams broke the tie in extra time.

Kora Bonicatto had 13 saves on 15 Marshall shots.

The Tigers (4-8-1 overall) play Southwest Conference rival Luverne at 2 p.m. today in the consolation semifinal round at The Schwan Cup White Division Tournament.

The Cardinals (12-3-0) lost 4-1 to St. Francis/North Branch in another quarterfinal game Monday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Hayfield 59, Canby 42

ST. CLAIR - Canby was limited to 17 second-half points during a 59-42 loss to Hayfield in the championship game at the St. Clair Holiday Tournament on Monday.

Trailing 34-25 at halftime, the Lancers were outscored 25-17 during the final 18 minutes.

Morgan Merritt led Canby with 16 points, while Ricki Kallhoff and Sydney Sisk each scored eight points. Kallhoff added six rebounds and three assists and Merritt chipped in three assists and three steals. Kate Devos pulled down five rebounds for the Lancers (7-3 overall).

Dani Wagner led all scorers with 25 points for Hayfield (8-1), which outrebounded Canby 34-25.

The Lancers travel to play Central Minnesota Christian in a Camden Conference game Thursday at Prinsburg.
