MARSHALL - Haley Thomforde, Morgan Zabel and Megan Strese all scored double-digits to lead Minnesota State-Moorhead to a 70-52 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference victory over Southwest Minnesota State on Saturday at the R/A Facility.

The loss for SMSU was its tenth consecutive defeat.

The Dragons (8-4 overall, 4-4 NSIC) shot 46 percent from the floor and hit 14 of 19 free throws. The Mustangs (2-10, 0-8 NSIC) could not keep pace, finishing 22 of 60 (37 percent) from the floor, including 5 of 19 (26 percent) from behind the 3-point arc.

Rebekah Rolling's jumper 38 seconds into the game gave SMSU its only lead at 2-0.

Strese countered with a layup with 19:04 left in the first half to tie the game and Savanna Handevidt drained a 3-pointer 26 seconds later, giving MSU-Moorhead the lead for good.

The Dragons led by as many as 17 points (33-16) in the first half on a jumper from Thomforde at the 6:58 mark.

The Mustangs used the final 5:17 of the first half to make a 10-5 run. Ellen Degler scored on a layup, Whitney Miller knocked down a 3-pointer, Alison Nagel scored with another layup and Emilee Duskee drained the second 3-pointer of the SMSU eruption.

Still, MSU-Moorhead led 38-26 at the intermission.

The Dragons went ahead by 23 points (56-33) with 12:34 left on a layup from Zabel. But the Mustangs answered with a 12-3 run that trimmed their deficit to 14 points (59-45) with 8:41 remaining.

Bree Holleman started the SMSU explosion with a jumper before three straight MSU-Moorhead turnovers led to a putback and another jumper from Degler and a layup from Mikayla Saathoff.

After Zabel connected with a 3-pointer for the Dragons, Degler and Nagel each scored baskets by working inside.

The Mustangs could not get any closer during the final 7 1/2 minutes of the game.

SMSU was led by Holleman's 11 points, five rebounds and three assists in 33 minutes on the court. Degler chipped in 10 points off the bench after finishing 5 of 8 from the floor.

MSU-Moorhead held a 42-29 rebounding advantage over SMSU.

The Dragons won the battle of points in the paint 38-24, points off turnovers 17-8 and second-chance points 18-8. The Mustangs finished with a 24-14 edge in bench scoring.

SMSU has now had losing streaks of 10 games in each of its last three seasons.

The Mustangs play at St. Cloud State on Friday and at Minnesota-Duluth on Saturday.
