age 82 of Ivanhoe

IVANHOE - Mass of Christian Burial for Norbert Kusnierek, 82, of Ivanhoe will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Ss. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Ivanhoe. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. today at the Birk Funeral Home in Ivanhoe, with a prayer service at 6 p.m. and rosary to follow. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at the Ss. Peter & Paul Catholic Cemetery in Ivanhoe. Birk Funeral Home of Ivanhoe is entrusted with the arrangements.

He passed away unexpectedly Thursday, Jan. 30, 2014, at the Hendricks Community Hospital.

Norbert Joseph Kusnierek was born April 17, 1931, on the family farm in Limestone Township in Lincoln County, near Ivanhoe, to parents Joseph and Helen (Dastych) Kusnierek. He was baptized, received his First Holy Communion and was confirmed at Ss. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Ivanhoe. He attended rural school in Limestone Township.

Norbert was united in marriage to Donna Dworak on Jan. 3, 1959 at Ss. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Ivanhoe. To this union they were blessed with two sons, Thomas and Joseph. Norbert and Donna raised their family on the Kusnierek family farm where he was born. He retired from farming in 1988 and they moved into Ivanhoe and he started driving bus for the Ivanhoe Public School and Lincoln HI until 1992.

Norbert was a self-taught woodworker and enjoyed working with wood, making many pieces of large and small furniture. A major accomplishment was making grandfather clocks for each of his sons. He spent many hours in his workshop during his retirement. Norbert loved to travel, driving many miles and even taking bus tours to explore around the country. He also enjoyed visiting over a cup of coffee and playing cards downtown and also the occasional visit to the casino. He was also an avid fan of various TV programs and he enjoyed listening to polka music.

He was a lifetime member of Ss. Peter & Paul Catholic Church and a 60 plus year member of the Knights of Columbus.

Grateful for having shared Norbert's life is wife of 55 years, Donna Kusnierek of Ivanhoe; his two sons, Tom (Jackie) Kusnierek of Plymouth, and Joe Kusnierek of Fairbault; two grandchildren, Mitch and Morgan Kusnierek of Fairbault; brothers and sisters-in-law, Dean (Gayle) Dworak, Darlyne (Vernon) Schwalbe, Priscilla Dworak and Evelyn Johnson; mother-in-law, Frances Dworak and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Helen (Dastych) Kusnierek; one brother, Jerome Kusnierek and two sisters, Amelia Gawarecki and Bernice VanOverbeke; three brothers-in-law, Dennis Dworak, Anton Gawarecki and Edwin VanOverbeke.
