MARSHALL - Fans in attendance at Southwest Minnesota State's Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference dual against Minnesota State on Saturday witnessed history as the Mustangs defeated the Mavericks for the first time since the 1990-91 season.

"That's a big win for us," SMSU coach Jesse Nelson said. "It's big for our program. Feels real good to get that monkey off your back and get that win. It feels great."

The Mustangs picked up wins in seven of the ten matches with three of those wins coming via pin.

Southwest Minnesota State heavyweight Cole Wilson locks down on Minnesota State’s Corby Running during the 285-pound match of a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference dual on Saturday at P.E. Gymnasium.

133-pounder Justin Reinsma, who was honored at the match for earning his 100th career victory earlier in the season, picked up the Mustang's first win of the afternoon, pinning Tanner Mills at the 1:56 mark.

Ethan Hildebrandt followed suit in the 141-pound match with a 10-6 decision over Alphonso Bruno. Beau Buysee picked up a win in the 149-pound match with a pin of Weston Droegemueller at the 4:28 mark.

After dropping the 157-pound bout, SMSU rattled off three straight wins in the form of 165-pounder Kyle Begin (pin at 2:56), 174-pounder Jacob Begin (major decision 9-0) and 184-pounder Andrew Rodas (2-0 decision).

MSU's Brendan Eichmann defeated Micah Larson in the 197-pound match 5-1 before heavyweight Cole Wilson defeated the Maverick's Corby Running 3-1 with a third-period takedown.

The takedown was something Wilson had seen an opening for the whole match, but was waiting for the right time.

"That takedown was there the whole time," Wilson said. "I wanted to save that until he was tired, but there were numerous takedowns throughout the match that I should have had and did capitalize on, but in the end, I knew I could get one down."

With the win, the Mustangs (10-4 overall, 4-1 NSIC) picked up their program-high fourth dual in NSIC action. SMSU wrestles at St. Cloud State on Thursday before hosting Northern State on Friday.
