NCAA BASKETBALL SCOUTING REPORT: SMSU begins four-game trip at Minnesota State

ABOUT SMSU

Southwest Minnesota State is 14-8, 11-5 NSIC, following a split last weekend in Marshall, losing 91-82 to Bemidji State, before defeating Minnesota-Crookston 79-53.

In the loss to BSU, SMSU held a 71-69 lead with 7 minutes left in the game before the Beavers used a 12-0 run to rally and earn the victory. Nick Smith paced SMSU with 19 points on 9 of 10 shooting with seven rebounds. SMSU shot 54 percent from the field, but BSU scored 52 points and shot 70 percent in the second half.

In the win over UMC, Shaun Condon scored a career-high 20 points and SMSU used a 24-0 run in the first half to build a 46-22 halftime lead and cruise to the victory. Smith added 18 points and nine rebounds.

For the season, Smith is one of five Mustangs to average double figuring scoring with a team-high 12.2 points per game and also leads the team with 6.9 rebounds per game. Vinard Birch (11.8), Shaun Condon (10.9), Matt Zager (10.5) and William Giddings (10.5) also average double figures in scoring. Joey Bartlett has a team-high 33 3-pointers, Zager has a team-high 31 steals, while Birch has dished out a team-high 96 assists. SMSU is shooting 50.3 percent from the field, 34.5 percent from 3-point range, 72 percent from the free throw line and averaging 74.7 points per game. SMSU holds a plus-4.8 rebound advantage over opponents.

ABOUT MINNESOTA STATE

The Mavericks (19-4, 13-3 NSIC) have three straight games and are 12-1 at home this season.

Assem Marei is averaging a team-high 16.5 ppg and a team-high 8.0 rpg, while shooting 61.5 percent from the field, ranking 24th in Division II. Zach Monaghan is averaging 14.7 ppg with a team-leading 184 assists - which ranks first in Division II - and has made 42 3-pointers. Tanner Adler has connected on a team-high 55 3-pointers. MSU is shooting 50.2 percent from the field, 40.8 percent from 3-point range, 69.8 percent from the free throw line and averaging 86.3 points per game.

Head coach Matt Margenthaler is in his 13th season at MSU with a record of 273-114.

ABOUT CONCORDIA-ST. PAUL

The Golden Bears (7-13, 4-12 NSIC) have won two straight and three of their last four games. Concordia hosts Sioux Falls on Friday night before taking on SMSU.

Terez VanPelt leads the squad averaging 18.9 ppg (76th in Division II) with a team-high 63 assists, while Travon Mitchell is averaging 13.6 ppg with a team-leading 38 3-pointers. CU is shooting 40.4 percent from the field, 34.5 percent from 3-point range, 68.5 percent from the free throw line and averaging 71.8 points per game.

Head coach Kelly Boe is in his eighth season at Concordia with a record of 107-106.

ABOUT SMSU

Southwest Minnesota State (4-16, 2-15 NSIC) hits the road for a four-game road swing starting this weekend with No. 24 Minnesota State at 6 p.m. today and Concordia-St. Paul at 4 p.m. Saturday.

SMSU is coming off a 1-1 home weekend versus Bemidji State (W, 76-64) and Minnesota Crookston?(L, 69-76) and is in search of its first NSIC?road win of the season.

Alison Nagel came off the bench to score 30 points on 13 of 18 shooting in Southwest Minnesota State's two Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference games last weekend. Nagel took down 12 rebounds and finished 4 of 4 from behind the arc.

Nagel helped lead SMSU to its 76-64 win over Bemidji State on Friday by scoring 14 points on 6 of 8 shooting off the bench. Mikayla Saathoff contrinuted 14 points and 13 assists, which was one assist short of the Mustangs' single-game record.

In SMSU's 76-69 loss to Minnesota-Crookston on Saturday, Nagel hit 7 of 10 shots from the field, including 2 of 2 from deep and finished with a team-high 16 points. Nagel finished two boards short of a double-double in the game as she snared eight.

ABOUT MINNESOTA?STATE

The Mavericks enter the weekend as the No. 23 ranked team in NCAA?Division II and currently sit in second place in the NSIC?South Division with their 12-4 conference record. MSU, 15-5 overall, has put together four straight wins after defeating U-Mary (84-68) and Minot State (80-62) on the road last weekend.

MSU?is led by senior forward Ali Wilkinson who leads the team in scoring, with an average of 18.3 points per game, and rebounding, with an average of 8.3. Currently, MSU's 80.6 points per game average in NSIC?games ranks first in the 16-team conference. MSU?also leads the NSIC in 3-point FG percentage defense (26.8), offensive rebounding (15.44), and turnover margin (6.38). MSU is holding opponents to 65.3 points per game. MSU?is 9-1 at home this season with its only loss coming on Jan. 18, to No. 11 Wayne State.

ABOUT CONCORDIA-ST. PAUL

The Golden Bears begin the weekend 17-6 overall and a 12-4 record within the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. CU, which entered the weekend receiving votes in the last NCAA poll, has gathered five straight wins, including eight straight at home coming into the weekend. CU is 11-2 at the Gangelhoff Center this season with the last loss coming on Nov. 30, 2013, to No. 17 Minnesota State. As a team in conference games, CU?is putting up an average of 69.9 points per game, while allowing an average of 67.6 points per game. CU leads the NSIC in field goal percentage defense (36.3%), and defensive rebounding (30.06). CU is led by 6-2, junior forward Anika Whiting, who is averaging 17.2 points and 6.9 rebounds per game.
