GIRLS BASKETBALL: Dawson-Boyd handles SWMC

DAWSON - Justine Lee and Katarina Kuhlmann sparked Camden Conference North Division champion Dawson-Boyd to a 72-52 non-conference victory over Red Rock Conference leader Southwest Minnesota Christian on Saturday.

Lee had quite possibly her best game thus far this season. She scored 37 points, made 11 steals, handed out seven assists and pulled down five rebounds, which was only three assists and five rebounds away from a quadruple-double.

Lee, who shot 12 of 17 from the field and 11 of 15 at the free-throw line, scored eight straight points as the Blackjacks led 27-13 with a little less than 6 minutes left before halftime.

"I felt our ball pressure forced (the Eagles) into committing turnovers and we were able to take advantage of that," said Lee, who turned several of her steals into easy layups in transition. Dawson-Boyd forced 23 miscues and made 17 of its own.

Lee also found several wide-open drives inside the lane.

"I think (Southwest Minnesota Christian defenders) were stuck on some screens and, if you would hesitate, they would just back off. It was an open lane," Lee said about taking the ball to the basket.

Kuhlmann's shooting heated up in the final 4 minutes of the first half, when she drained a pair of 3-pointers and Kelly Husby added a putback. For good measure, Kulhmann capped the Blackjacks' 11-3 scoring spree with another 3-pointer that helped Dawson-Boyd maintain a 14-point (38-24) at halftime.

Kuhlmann, who finished with 21 points, shot 6 of 13 from the field, including a 4 of 5 effort from 3-point range. She also made 5 of 6 free throws.

"I was able to find an open spot and my teammates were able to get the ball to me and I just hit them," said Kuhlmann, who was not heavily defended around the arc.

Dawson-Boyd led 72-44 in the final 2 minutes, when the Southwest Minnesota Christian scored the final eight points of the game. That run was only a single point greater than the 9-2 run the Eagles created to trim their deficit to 27-19 until 4 minutes were left in the first half.

Then Kulhmann countered the Eagles' rally from long-range.

Ann Pater led Southwest Minnesota Christian with 16 points with seven rebounds and two steals, while teammate Tianna Top had 15 points, five rebounds and two blocked shots. Savannah Tinklenberg chipped in 10 points and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds as the Eagles dropped to 15-5 overall.

Sadie Zaiser also collected nine rebounds for Dawson-Boyd (17-3), which has won 11 of its last 12 games, including seven straight victories.

"The last two weeks, something just clicked with all of us," Kulhmann said. "We have had tremendous team work and we have been moving the ball a lot."

Just in time for the looming section playoffs.

The Blackjacks complete their regular season with a Camden Conference game at Renville County West at 7:30 p.m.
