WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Mustangs fall to Minot St.

February 17, 2014
Marshall Independent

MINOT, N.D. Minot State's Carly Boag scored a school single-game record 39 points and grabbed 18 rebounds and in the process became the program's all-time leading scorer in leading the Beavers to a 76-66 victory over Southwest Minnesota State in NSIC women's basketball on Saturday night.

The Mustangs (4-20, 2-18 NSIC) were led by Alison Nagel, who scored 21 points on 7 of 14 shooting. It was the sixth 20-point game of the season for Nagel.

Bree Holleman also added a season-high 20 points on 7 of 9 shooting, including four 3-pointers.

The Mustangs ended the game shooting 45 percent (21 of 47) from the field and made 18 of 22 free throws, but it wasn't enough to overcome 16 turnovers and MISU's rebound advantage.

After the Beavers built a 24-14 lead with eight minutes remaining in the half, the Mustangs held Minot State scoreless for the next seven minutes while they put together an 11-0 run to take their first lead of the game.

Minot State closed the half with a pair of field goals to take a 28-25 halftime lead.

The Beavers pushed the lead to six points on several occasions early in the second half, before the Mustangs rallied to within 42-41 with 13 minutes remaining following a 3-pointer by Watts.

Minot State came right back with a 9-0 run to push the advantage to 51-41 with less than 10 minutes left in the game.

After the Mustangs cut the deficit to five, the Beavers came right back with seven straight points of their own to extend the lead to 58-46 with seven minutes left. The lead never dipped below 10 points for the remainder of the game.

The Mustangs will close the regular season next weekend with two home games at the R/A Facility. They will face Concordia-St. Paul on Friday before taking on Minnesota State on Saturday.
