PREP BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Sting wins close game versus LQPV

MADISON - The Yellow Medicine East Sting advanced to the second round of the Class A Section 3 tournament after defeating Lac qui Parle Valley 73-71 on Thursday night.

"Grant Lalim scored the winning basket with a breakaway layup as time expired. Very exciting game," Sting head coach Jake Suter said. "We led by eight points early in the second half, but we were down by eight with six minutes to go."

Tyson Velde led YME with 20 points and 16 rebounds.

The Sting will now travel to Redwood Falls to face the top-seeded Redwood Valley on Saturday.

Canby 74, Ortonville 51

CANBY - The Canby girls basketball team finished the regular season with a 74-51 non-conference win over Ortonville in Canby Thursday night.

Morgan Merritt led the Lancers with a 21-point, 10-assist double-double. She also had four rebounds and five steals in the win.

Ricki Kallhoff added 19 points, five rebounds and two blocked shots while Brandi Merritt scored eight points.

Canby will be in action again next Saturday as the two-seed in the Section 3A tournament when they face the winner of the Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg/ Lincoln HI play-in game in Montevideo.
