SMSU students participating in the Adventure Ropes class visited the MERIT Center grounds to try their hand at repelling from walls Monday. The class is offered through the physical education department at SMSU and has been taught by Dr. Frankie Albitz for more than three years. Safety and equipment, as well as belaying, rappelling and climbing are all part of the course. Donations from the SMSU Veterans’ Club made it possible for the class to use the MERIT Center facility for rappelling. “It’s something the class has wanted to do for a while and there are some veterans in the class,” said Justin Guggisberg, the southwest Minnesota coordinator for veterans affairs, as well as a student in the class. Pictured is Jake Begin rappelling down the wall of one of the MERIT Center training buildings, while Guggisberg helps stabilize Begin’s ropes from the ground.
