MARSHALL - Southwest School of Dance director Charlotte Wendel said her students' upcoming recital will include a "smorgasbord of dance."
The Southwest School of Dance is having a spring recital at 6 p.m. today in the Marshall Middle School Theater.
Wendel said the recital will include all of the class dances from preschool on up as well as some of the competition dances.
"So there will be jazz, ballet, pointe, lyrical modern and tap," Wendel said. Wendel said there will be many great tap numbers in the recital. "There's going to be a lot of tumbling and musical theater."
All in all, the evening will include about 45 dances, Wendel said, which includes a huge variety of numbers, levels and genres.
"It's a really nice balance and mixture of dances," Wendel said. Some of the dances are titled "Seven Devils," "I Bruise Easily," "Turn the Beat Around," "Castle on a Cloud" and "Old Time Rock and Roll."
Wendel has two seniors graduating this year, Sydney Matthys and Emma Thordson.
"They've been with me since they've been 3 years old," Wendel said.
Wendel said the spring recital will feature some new pieces the dancers have worked on these past few months.
"These are all dances they have learned since the Christmas recital," Wendel said.
"These dances have shown the progression (of the dancers)," Wendel added. "They've made a lot of improvements. There's a really good group of kids performing this year."
This year, Wendel decided to try a new format with preparing for the spring recital, having the dress rehearsal the week before and straightening everything out during the week.
"I'm really pleased with how that worked out," Wendel said. She said having the dress rehearsal a week ahead of time allowed the chance to put finishing touches on the dances. "I'm very proud of the program that we're going to put on."
