Better Homes and Garbage, Seat Yourself, By the Yard, RockTenn, Anchor Glass, lol designs, Liberty Carton Companythese are a few of my favorite things. Are some of you humming the tune from "The Sound of Music"? Thought so. Anyway, the other day I was sifting through stuff on my desk and a thought came to my mind ("Geezwonder if it was a lucid thought?"). We haven't talked about a very important part of the recycling process - buying recycled - for a long time. Considering that one of the chasing arrows in the recycling symbol represents just that is reason enough for us to have a little conversation about it. And, even better the conversation will be about some of the many companies right here in our own great State of Minnesota that use recycled feedstock in the manufacture of their products.
Well, the first one mentioned, Better Homes and Garbage, isn't actually a manufacturer but it's like our local Habitat for Humanity ReStore - a great place to purchase remodeling/building materials, from window and doors to flooring and trim, from kitchen cabinets to furniture, from tubs to toilets and everything in between - including the kitchen sink!
Seat Yourself, By The Yard and lol designs design and manufacture some really cool outdoor furniture using recycled plastic and rubber. RockTenn manufactures paperboard packaging such as boxes for tissues, cereal, crackers, mac n cheese (I'm hungry now) and the like and corrugated cardboard boxes using recycled paper and cardboard. Anchor Glass manufactures glass containers for the food and beverage industry using about 40-50 percent recycled glass from other food and beverage bottles and jars. Brand names they manufacture containers for range from Heinz to Snapple. Liberty Carton Company manufactures linerboard for paper packaging from used corrugated cardboard.
To find out more about the companies listed above and about all the other ones in Minnesota visit www.pca.state.mn.us and type Minnesota Recycled Products Directory in the search box. Go Minnesota!
Don't forget to buy recycled - it's part of what makes recycling successful! As a general reference, here are examples of common items that may contain post-consumer recycled material (post-consumer - something that has been used and then recycled): paper items such as computer paper, greeting cards, packaging for cereals, tissues, etc.; steel products, including cans, have contained post-consumer steel for a long time; many glass bottles and jars and aluminum items; recycled plastic can be used for carpets, clothing, trash containers, toys, yard/garden supplies, plastic "lumber," and much more.
Keep reducing, reusing, recycling and buying recycled!
