Are accidents really accidents? If not, what word best describes an unintented result?

This question has come up before and usually in the context of describing collisions involving automobiles. According to one definition an accident is; "An unfortunate incident that happens unexpectedly and unintentionally, typically resulting in damage or injury." There is specific driving behavior which increases your risk of being injured or causing damage but if a driver is reasonably adhering to established traffic laws an unintended event could occur which results in an "accident". In my opinion, the word "accident" describes a lack of intent to cause the resulting action.
