MARSHALL – It was utter domination from the Minneota Vikings on senior night during their triangular against Marshall and Bold. The Vikings kicked off their night by defeating Bold 74-0. In the the night’s main event it was a showdown between two of top teams in the area, with the Vikings coming out on top 39-15.

Hsa Khee Lar got the dual started off on the right foot for the Tigers with an 11-10 decision victory over Eric Carrasco. Following Khee Lar’s victory the Vikings rattled off nine match victories. During that stretch the Vikings won seven by decision and two by fall. Out of the seven decision victories for the Vikings three of them were decided by two points or less.

“We battled and won the close matches,” Minneota coach Joel Skillings said. “I thought our position was good. We were scoring at the edge of the mat, which means that we’re working. Marshall is an excellent team. They have a chance to make state. They came in here thinking they were going to give us a run, and I think they wrestled a bunch of good matches. We just happened to be the ones that came out on top in the close ones. I have to give my kids credit.”

Minneota’s Landon Rolbiecki picked up the matches first pinfall victory in the 145-weight class. Rolbiecki pinned Marshall’s Zach Stahl with 1:01 left in the first period. Alec Bueltel picked up Minneota’s second pinfall victory in the 182-weight class over Elijah Sterner.

Wyatt Martin got the Tigers back on the board in the 182-weigth class with an 8-3 victory over Everett VanHecke. In the following match Zach Felcyn defeated Minneota’s Josh Laleman by decision (3-2).

Jaiden Bahr scored Marshall’s only pinfall victory in the 220-weight class. Bahr pinned Minneota’s Blake Nelson 59 seconds into the match.

The Vikings closed out the match with a pinfall victory in the 285-weight class. Trent Esping pinned Brendin Otto with four seconds left in the first period.

Despite the loss, Marshall coach Justin Bouwman said he was proud of how hard his team fought.

“We overcame our mental block of Minneota is unbeatable,” he said. “Our guys really stepped up and took it to them. We only gave up two pins. I can’t say enough about these guys. Our guys went out there and gave it their best, and that’s all I can ever ask.”

The Tigers opened the triangular with a 66-10 victory over Bold. Khee Lar, Grant Louwagie, Spencer Wambeke and Stahl all won by fall.

“We had seven days off, and I think it helped a little bit,” Bouwman said. “We came out with a bunch of energy. Bold is a young team and they are building. Our kids were really aggressive and they know getting the pin is what’s going to win us the most duals.”

Skillings said getting the sweep on senior night was the perfect way for the seniors to wrap up their final matches at home.

“The truth is I owe a lot to these kids,” he said. “All those seniors that stay with the program for such a long time and give so much back to the program. They gave me an opportunity to coach them and I think that’s huge. We’re a small school. I saw them grow up and come up in the program.”
