SMSU Jazz Ensemble to present concerts in Marshall and Luverne with guest Kate Skinner
The SMSU Jazz Ensemble will be hosting Kate Skinner, guest jazz pianist, vocalist, composer, and educator on Monday, March 24-Tuesday, March 25. The ensemble will perform two concerts with Skinner, the first on Monday, March 24, at Luverne High School at 7:30 p.m. The concert will also feature the Luverne High School Jazz Band. The second concert will be on Tuesday, March 25, at 7:30 p.m. in the SMSU Fine Arts Theatre. This concert will also feature the Lakeview High School and Marshall High School. Jazz Bands. Both concerts are free and open to the public.
In addition, there will be an open discussion session with Skinner on Tuesday, March 25, from noon-1 p.m. in the SMSU Fine Arts Theatre. This session is also free and anyone is welcome to attend.
As a jazz pianist and vocalist, Skinner maintains an active performing, composing, and teaching career in the western United States. A native of Ogden, Utah, Skinner pulls influences from the bluegrass and classical roots of her childhood into both her songwriting and performing as a jazz musician. Skinner is currently assistant professor of Jazz Piano at the University of Idaho in Moscow, Idaho, where she directs Jazz Band II and teaches multiple courses in jazz studies. She holds M.M. and D.A. degrees in Jazz Studies from the University of Northern Colorado.
