Tibetans scuffle with police outside the Chinese Embassy in India
NEW DELHI (AP) — Dozens of Tibetan protesters have clashed with police outside the Chinese Embassy in New Delhi as Tibetans living in exile mark the 66th anniversary of their uprising against China. Hundreds also marched on Monday in the north Indian town of Dharamshala, the seat of the exiled Tibetan government and home of the Dalai Lama. The protesters shouted anti-China slogans and carried Tibetan flags. Some were briefly detained by the police as they tried to enter the high-security embassy complex. India considers Tibet to be part of China, although it hosts the Tibetan exiles.
A cargo ship hits a tanker and they catch fire off England
LONDON (AP) — A cargo ship hit a tanker carrying jet fuel for the U.S. military off England, setting both vessels on fire and sending fuel pouring into the North Sea. A local lawmaker says all 37 crew members aboard are safe Monday and one is hospitalized. Greenpeace U.K. says it is too early to assess the extent of any environmental damage from the collision, which took place in a busy fishing ground and close to major seabird colonies. The tanker was operating as part of the U.S. government’s Tanker Security Program, a group of commercial vessels that can be contracted to carry fuel for the military when needed.
North Korea fires several ballistic missiles after the US and SKorea began military drills
SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korea’s military says North Korea has fired several ballistic missiles into the sea. The launch Monday happened hours after South Korean and U.S. troops kicked off their large annual combined drills, which the North views as an invasion rehearsal. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said the missile firings, North Korea’s fifth missile launch event this year, were detected from the North’s Hwanghae province but gave no further details such as how far they flew. Earlier Monday, the South Korean and U.S. militaries began their drills. The exercises began after the South Korean and U.S. militaries paused live-fire training while Seoul investigates how two of its fighter jets mistakenly bombed a civilian area during a warm-up drill last week.
More than 30 nations will participate in Paris planning talks on a security force for Ukraine
PARIS (AP) — Military officials from more than 30 nations are expected to take part in Paris talks on the creation of an international security force for Ukraine. A French military official says such an international force would aim to dissuade Russia from launching another offensive after any ceasefire comes into effect. The long list of participants on Tuesday will also include Asian and Oceania nations joining the talks remotely. France and Britain are working on the planning together as they aim to build what one French official described as a coalition of nations “able and willing” to be part of an effort to safeguard Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire.
