UN agency closes its remaining Gaza bakeries as food supplies dwindle under
DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — The U.N. food agency is closing all of its bakeries in the Gaza Strip, officials said Tuesday, as supplies dwindle after Israel sealed off the territory from all imports nearly a month ago. Israel, which later resumed its offensive to pressure the Hamas militant group into accepting changes to their ceasefire agreement, said enough food had entered Gaza during the six-week truce to sustain the territory’s roughly 2 million Palestinians. Markets largely emptied weeks ago.
Germany sees Ukraine truce efforts as deadlocked
KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Germany’s chief diplomat is describing U.S. President Donald Trump’s efforts to secure a truce in the three-year war between Russia and Ukraine as deadlocked. But China’s foreign minister says the ongoing talks between Washington and Moscow on finding a settlement are an encouraging sign. German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock arrived in Kyiv for an unannounced visit on Tuesday. She said that European allies’ continued support for Ukraine in the war is crucial “due to the deadlock” between the U.S. and Russia on forging a ceasefire deal. Trump on Sunday scolded Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Chinese military launches large-scale drills around Taiwan
TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — The Chinese military has announced large-scale drills around Taiwan as it again warned the self-ruled island against seeking formal independence. A spokesperson for the People’s Liberation Army’s Eastern Theater Command said the joint drills involve navy, air ground and rocket forces. The exercises are meant to be a “severe warning and forceful containment against Taiwan independence,” the spokesperson, Shi Yi, said in a statement. Tuesday’s drills comes just two weeks after a large-scale exercise in mid-March, when Beijing sent a large number of drones and ships toward the island. Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defence said it had tracked 19 Chinese navy vessels in the waters surrounding the island in a 24-hour period from 6 a.m. Monday until 6 a.m. Tuesday.
Palestinian is first detainee under 18 to die in Israeli prison, officials say
JERUSALEM (AP) — Officials say a teenager from the West Bank who was held in an Israeli prison for six months without being charged died after collapsing in unclear circumstances. They say he is the first Palestinian under 18 to die in Israeli detention. His family said the 17-year-old was healthy before his arrest for allegedly throwing stones at soldiers. Rights groups have documented widespread abuse in Israeli detention facilities holding thousands of Palestinians rounded up after Hamas’ Oct. 7, 2023, attack ignited the war in Gaza. Prison authorities deny any systematic abuse and say they investigate accusations of wrongdoing by prison staff. But the Israeli ministry overseeing prisons acknowledges having reduced conditions inside detention facilities to the minimum level allowed by law.
