Aldi coming to Marshall
MARSHALL — There’s a construction fence and a pile of rubble where a warehouse once stood at the corner of Boyer Drive and U.S. Highway 59 in Marshall. This week, a sign went up announcing the lot’s future occupant: an Aldi supermarket.
“We are excited to confirm that Marshall will be home to a new store this year,” said Matt Lilla, Faribault Division vice president for Aldi. Lilla said the store is planned to open in late fall.
A $2 million building permit for the new store site, at 1400 Boyer Drive, was included on the city of Marshall’s May 22 building permit list. However, the permit list — posted in the Marshall City Council’s online meeting agenda — didn’t say exactly what was being built on Boyer Drive, other than a new structure.
“Our customers spoke and we listened,” Lilla said of the planned new Aldi. “Thanks to their input, the new Marshall store will offer a smarter, faster and easier shopping experience.”
The Marshall Aldi location will have five aisles and 13,000 square feet of selling space, Lilla said. The store will maximize refrigerator space for fresh produce, dairy and meat, he said. The Marshall store, like other new Aldi stores, will use more environmentally-friendly building materials like recycled materials, energy-saving refrigeration and LED lighting, he said.
Lilla said rising demand is fueling “significant expansion” for Aldi. The company has more than 1,800 stores in 35 states.
Aldi’s company website lists more than 50 store locations around Minnesota, and two stores in Sioux Falls, S.D.
Lilla said Marshall made a good location for a new store because of its proximity to customers.
“When it comes to choosing store locations, we look at many factors,” Lilla said of the planned Marshall store. “We want the best sites that are closest to our shoppers and can support a high daily traffic volume. As the demand for Aldi grows, so do our real estate options. Bottom line, we want to be conveniently located for our shoppers.”
