Cottonwood man charged with assault in April 16 stabbing

MARSHALL — A Cottonwood man was charged with assault last week, after a stabbing that sent one man to the hospital.

Jose Manuel Veliz Vasquez, 35, of Cottonwood, appeared in Lyon County District Court on April 17 on two counts of second degree assault charges, and one count of domestic assault.

While Veliz Vasquez was formally charged last week Friday, the Independent had to request a mailed copy of the criminal complaint from the Lyon County District Court. In order to help prevent the spread of COVID-19, Minnesota courts are restricting access to courtrooms, and to public access computer terminals for reading court records.

According to the criminal complaint, Veliz Vasquez allegedly stabbed his brother-in-law and cut his wife’s hand in an incident at a Cottonwood residence on April 16.

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office said responders were called to an assault involving a stabbing at about 9:21 p.m. The Sheriff’s Office said responders found a 23-year-old man at the residence who had injuries consistent with a stab wound. The man was later flown to North Memorial Hospital in Robbinsdale, for treatment of possible internal injuries.

The criminal complaint said the stabbing victim was Veliz Vasquez’s brother-in-law, and he was trying to mediate an argument between Veliz Vasquez and his wife when Veliz Vasquez stabbed him. Veliz Vasquez also ended up cutting his wife on the hand in the incident, the complaint alleges.

Bail for Veliz Vasquez was set at $60,000 without conditions, or $45,000 bail or bond with conditions including that he appear in court, that he abstains from alcohol and drugs, and that he has no contact with the victims in the incident, court records said.

A future hearing date was set for April 28, court records said.

Starting at $4.38/week.
