One dead after Shetek boat collision
MURRAY COUNTY — Responders recovered the body of a man from North Lake Shetek after a collision between two boats on Saturday night, the Murray County Sheriff’s Office said.
Logan Nelson was thrown from one of the boats in the collision, the Sheriff’s Office said.
The Sheriff’s Office received reports of the boat accident at 8:09 p.m. Saturday. A 2000 Tige boat operated by Matthew Slater and a 2018 Tracker boat operated by Brian Bergling collided on North Lake Shetek. Bergling was the only occupant on the Tracker boat, but the Tige boat had 11 total people on board at the time of the accident, the Sheriff’s Office said.
Two people on the Tige boat were taken to area hospitals, and their conditions are unknown at this time, the Sheriff’s Office said. Nelson was thrown from the Tige boat in the collision.
The Murray County Sheriff’s Office, assisting agencies and civilians all joined in the search for Nelson on Saturday night until it was discontinued due to darkness and wind. The search resumed at first light on Sunday.
Around 11:38 a.m. Nelson’s body was recovered, after an extensive search of the scene, the Sheriff’s Office said. The accident is still under investigation, the Sheriff’s Office said.
The Murray County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the accident scene by Tracy Ambulance and the Tracy Fire Department, Lake Shetek First Responders, the Currie Fire Department, North Memorial Air Care, the Walnut Grove Fire Department, the Slayton Fire Department, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, the LeClaires of Currie, and the Codington County water rescue team from Watertown, S.D.
