Community fundraisers focus on Aquatic Center project

Marshall Community Foundation, ‘Make a Splash’ Committee to support additional pool amenities

MARSHALL — After a referendum for a new aquatic center in Marshall passed last month, additional financial support for the project has started to come in from community members.

On Tuesday, the city announced that the Marshall Community Foundation has pledged $75,000 for additional amenities at the new aquatic center. A community group, the “Jump In, Make a Splash” Committee, is also working with the foundation and the city of Marshall to raise money to support the aquatic center project.

“Jump In, Make a Splash” Committee co-chairs Marc Klaith and Amanda Schwartz spoke to members of the Marshall City Council on Tuesday.

“We’re excited the vote went through and we’re going to have a new aquatic center in the future,” Klaith said. “Knowing that, we know that the funds are there to build that aquatic center. But after the vote came through, there was a group that when we sat down, there are some amenities we’d like to add to the aquatic center to make it really a destination.”

Klaith said the committee plans to send out a fundraising letter in the community in the next week.

“We have had people in the community come forward to us already, asking to be involved in the partnership of this facility,” Klaith said.

“We know this project will have long-term positive impacts for the community,” Schwartz said.

Klaith said the aquatic center project’s impact goes beyond the city of Marshall.

The funds contributed by community groups will help to add features like shade structures, an additional slide, climbing wall and more to the new aquatic center.

The local sales tax extension approved in November’s referendum will generate $18.3 million in funding to build the new aquatic center. However, the estimated cost for the aquatic center’s base bid package is about $18.95 million, and there are also about $1.47 million in possible bid alternates that could be approved.

The “Jump In, Make A Splash” committee was formed in partnership with the Marshall Community Foundation, and the city of Marshall. The Foundation will serve as the fiscal agent for the project, and manage the fund for additional aquatic center amenities, city spokespeople said.

The Marshall Community Foundation is a local foundation led by a board of community volunteers.

“The Marshall Community Foundation is excited to be a sponsor of the new Marshall Aquatic Center,” Marshall Community Foundation Board chairman Sean Culhane said in a Tuesday news release. “Our mission is to enrich our quality of life by connecting the resources of today with the dreams of tomorrow. We believe that the aquatic center project aligns wonderfully with that goal and helps us support community improvement, diversity, wellness and youth development here in Marshall. We are excited for this opportunity and its impact on our community.”

Starting at $4.38/week.
