Bar owner puts vintage leather helmets on display

MARSHALL — The owner of Fuzzy’s Bar has added some vintage items to his collection of sports memorabilia.

Dan Fosvick said he was delighted to recently take possession of a couple of vintage leather football helmets from Carrie Jones, the daughter of the late R.A. Colvin, the longtime Southwest Minnesota State University head athletic trainer who died in July of 1994.

The two helmets — circa 1940s, before face masks — now sit in one of the bar’s display cases, joining such prized items as football jerseys from Marshall natives and college football standouts Trey Lance of North Dakota State, now with the Dallas Cowboys; South Dakota State’s Reece Winkelman; and the Gophers’ Blaise Andries.

“The helmets were sitting around in a box, and (my brothers) Mark and Steve and I decided we’d donate them to Fuzzy’s, so they could be displayed and enjoyed by others,” said Jones.

“They came from the old Marshall High School on Lyon Street before it was torn down. He collected antique sporting equipment, such as golf clubs, and (the helmets) were the only things we were able to pinpoint that came from Marshall High School. How they came into his possession, I’m not sure,” she added.

Jones said her father worked with many area high schools in addition to his SMSU duties.

“If someone was injured, he took it upon himself to help get them back on the field,” she said.

The helmets run on the small side, as Fosvick discovered when he and bar patron Mike Leary tried them on recently.

“They were painful to get off,” he said.

“She (Jones) kept telling me she was going to donate them,” said Fosvick. “A lot of people have commented on them.”

Starting at $4.38/week.
