MARSHALL — It’s a milestone year at Boulder Creek Assisted Living & Memory Care, and community members are being invited to help celebrate, Jan Mason said. Next week, Boulder Creek will be marking its 10th anniversary with events like a scavenger hunt around Marshall, and a visit from the Scotty Biggs Barbeque food truck.

“It should be a lot of fun,” said Mason, assisted living director at Boulder Creek. Clues for the scavenger hunt will be released on Boulder Creek’s website and Facebook page starting Monday. Events like virtual dementia tours, which teach people about the effects of dementia, are also planned for later this fall.

Boulder Creek Assisted Living & Memory Care opened on June 30, 2014. Boulder Creek’s history goes back to efforts by Marshall community members to meet a need for memory care and respite care, a news release said. The Carr family of Marshall, Boulder Estates Executive Director Jim Knudson, and Jamie Engers Lanners all worked to create a safe and secure facility that felt like home.

Boulder Creek’s facility was designed with two distinct “neighborhoods,” for tenants with dementia or related conditions. Boulder Creek provides care and activities to help residents live life to the fullest, as well as a support group for families of residents. Dementia doesn’t only have an impact on people with the disease, but their loved ones as well, the news release said.

Over the past 10 years, the services Boulder Creek have grown to include new technology and training, an on-site therapy dog, and a community dementia lending library, the news release said.

Mason said Boulder Creek staff and residents were looking forward to celebrating the anniversary, although the scope of the events had to change due to COVID precautions.

“It is still exciting,” she said. Instead of having large public events, there are going to be some celebrations just for residents and family. However, the community will be able to take part in a scavenger hunt.

Mason said purple “boulders” had been hidden around Marshall. Clues to their locations will be released online every day from July 22-28, at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. The first person to retrieve the rock will be able to turn it in for a prize at Boulder Creek, she said.

In addition, the public is invited to come to the Boulder Creek parking lot on Tuesday for Scotty Biggs Barbeque. The food truck will be at Boulder Creek from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Other events, like virtual dementia tours, are planned to be part of “Shine A Light on Dementia” in October, Mason said.

Starting at $4.38/week.
