A ‘Harvest’ of fun in Porter this weekend
Porter residents will be celebrating their community this weekend, and there will be plenty of ways for the public to join in. Porter’s annual Harvest Festival starts Friday, with events to celebrate the city’s 143-year history.
The lineup at this year’s festival includes active fun like a kickball tournament, as well as music, food and community recognitions. The Harvest Festival starts Friday night, with a burger supper supporting the Porter Development Project. Organizers said the meal will also celebrate 36 years of the Porter Cafe. The supper will be served at Porter’s new concession stand and picnic shelter in James Schoneman Memorial Park.
A variety of events at the park will also help kick things off on Friday night, including a fun run, Porter’s annual North versus South softball game, and the coronation of this year’s Senior King and Queen.
The park is the center of events on Saturday, too, with a kickball tournament and vendor show starting in the morning. In the afternoon, there will also be kids’ events including face painting, making tie-dye shirts, and more. Live music is part of the day’sevents, with both an outdoor concert featuring Blake Schmitz, and a street dance featuring Stitches.
One of the festival’s returning events, the tractor and equipment show, will start Saturday morning. In addition to displays of farm vehicles and equipment, the show also offers refreshments and activities throughout the day. A tractor parade will go around the park on Saturday afternoon.
The Harvest Festival wraps up Sunday with events including a community worship service at Bethel Lutheran, music and dancing at the Porter Community Hall. A silent auction of desserts and other goodies will also be going on at the hall starting at 11:30. Competitors in a grilling contest will be serving up their creations starting at noon.
There will also be action going on at the Porter Traildusters Arena on Sunday, as the Traildusters Saddle Club hosts a horse show. Age groups ranging from kids to adults will compete in a variety of races and games on horseback.
