Candidates file for city council, school board seats
MARSHALL — So far, there are a total of five candidates who are running in Marshall’s City Council race this fall. Based on candidate filings, the council race in Marshall’s Ward 2 will be contested.
Marshall City Clerk Steven Anderson said Derek Deutz and David Sturrock have filed to run for the Ward 2 council seat. Sturrock has served on the Marshall City Council in the past, with his most recent term ending in 2018.
Marshall Mayor Bob Byrnes has filed for re-election. Ward 1 council member Amanda Schroeder, and Ward 3 council member James Lozinski, are also running for re-election.
Candidate filing information from the Minnesota Secretary of State’s Office also said there are two current Marshall School Board members who are running for re-election. Current school board chairman Matt Coleman has filed for candidacy, as has current board member Anne Marie Vorbach. Vorbach was appointed to the school board this year, to serve the remainder of the term of former board member Bill Mulso.
While there have been two candidates who filed for Marshall School Board, there are three seats up for election this fall.
The filing period for city council, township board, and school board positions in Minnesota closes at 5 p.m. on Tuesday.
Many area cities, townships and school boards will have elections in November. Full listings of open seats and candidates can be found on the Minnesota Secretary of State’s candidate filing website, https://candidates.sos.mn.gov.
School districts in Lyon County holding school board elections include Marshall, Lakeview, Minneota, Lynd, Milroy and Tracy Area School District. Marshall, Lakeview, Minneota, Lynd, and Milroy will be each be electing three school board members, while the Tracy school district will be electing four board members.
According to the Minnesota Secretary of State’s Office, so far Sean Brovold and Jay Meiners have filed to run for Lakeview School Board. Suzie Rauch has filed to run for Lynd School Board. Jay Fultz, Jeffrey S. Knott and Nicole Swanson have filed to run for Tracy School Board.
In municipal races, Tracy McCloud has filed to run for one of two Balaton City Council seats up for election. Susan Johnson has filed to run for mayor of Florence, and Robin Perea and Diana Slyter have filed to run for two Florence City Council seats up for election. In Lynd, Justin Guggisberg has filed to run for mayor, and Jerry Sodemann and Shantel L. Williams have filed to run for two Lynd City Council seats. In Minneota, Chris Swoboda has filed to run for one of two city council seats. In Russell, Hilary Buchert has filed for mayor, and Linda Escher has filed to run for one of two city council seats. In Tracy, Seth Schmidt has filed to run for one of three city council seats up for election.
