Marshall mayor, council races contested

Cottonwood, Taunton face shortage of candidates

MARSHALL — The city of Marshall will be having contested races in two municipal elections this fall, according to candidate filings.

Marshall Mayor Bob Byrnes will be running for re-election, against challenger Noel Ayala. A total of three candidates have also filed for election in Marshall’s Ward 2 precinct. Dereck Deutz, Amanda Schwartz and David Sturrock will all be running for Marshall City Council in Ward 2.

Some of the candidates have been on the ballot in Marshall before. Ayala was one of two challengers who ran for Marshall mayor in 2020. Sturrock is also a past city councilman, whose most recent term ended in 2018.

There will also be several candidates to choose from in the Marshall Public Schools school board election this fall. The board has a total of three seats up for election, and six candidates have filed. Candidates include current board members Matt Coleman and Anne Marie Vorbach, along with candidates Mary Swanson, Timothy Van Moer, Anne Veldhuisen and Charlotte Wahle.

The filing period for Minnesota city council, school board and township board positions closed Tuesday. Full information on local elections and candidates can be found at the Minnesota Secretary of State’s candidate filing website, https://candidates.sos.mn.gov.

In Lyon County, there will be mayor and council races in the cities of Balaton, Cottonwood, Florence, Garvin, Ghent, Lynd, Minneota, Russell, Taunton and Tracy. In the city of Cottonwood, Corey Moseng filed for the mayoral race. There were two candidates, Shannon Geihl and Michael Horner, who filed for two open Cottonwood City Council seats.

The city of Taunton also has fewer candidates running than there are positions up for election this fall, according to the Secretary of State’s Office. Eriann Faris is running for mayor, but only one candidate, Joseph DeVlaeminck, filed for city council. There are two Taunton council seats up for election this fall.

The city of Russell is the only community besides Marshall in Lyon County that will have a contested mayoral race this fall. Hilary Buchert and Kristi Wiese have filed for mayor. There are also a total of five candidates who will be running for a total of two city council seats. Robert Buehler, Linda Escher, Dawn Garbe, Steven Schouviller and Joel Van Damme have all filed for Russell City Council.

The city of Tracy will be electing a total of three city council members this fall, and seven candidates have filed to run for those three seats. Candidates are Rhonda Fredericks, Jeffrey Heronimus, Brian Hinrichs, George Landuyt, Jr., Tony Peterson, Michael Ross and Seth Schmidt.

In Balaton, Lonnie Lambertus filed for mayor. Greg Erickson, Troy Jones and Tracy McCloud filed for two council seats.

In Florence, Susan Johnson filed for mayor. Robin Perea and Diana Slyter filed for two council seats.

In Garvin, Jim Julien field for mayor. Don Peterson and Christian Smith filed for two council seats.

In Ghent, Doug Anderson filed for mayor, and Tim Van Keulen and Michael Warrent filed for two council seats.

In the city of Lynd, Justin Guggisberg filed for mayor, and Jerry Sodemann and Shantel Williams filed for two council seats.

In Minneota, John Rolbiecki filed for mayor. Katie Boettger, Travis Gillund and Chris Swoboda filed for two council seats.

The Lakeview, Minneota, Lynd, Milroy, RTR and Tracy school districts are among those having school board elections this fall. Most of those districts will have a total of three school board seats up for election. RTR will be filling a total of three seats, including an at-large board member, one board member from Russell and one board member from Ruthton. The Tracy Area school district will be electing a total of four board members.

Candidates who filed for Lakeview School Board include Sean Brovold, Jason Louwagie and Jay Meiners. Candidates who filed for Minneota School Board include Emily Coequyt, Julie Mead, Ryan Runia and Zack Sorenson. Candidates who filed for Lynd School Board include Jon Beebout, Dennis Guza and Suzie Rauch. Candidates who filed for Milroy School Board are Ashley Christensen and Mary Leach. Candidates who filed for Tracy School Board include Jay Fultz, Taylor Hoffbeck, Jeffrey Knott and Nicole Swanson.

In the RTR district, Tony Dybdahl has filed for the at-large school board seat. Bobbie Lensing has filed for the Russell seat, and Alan Matzner has filed for the Ruthton seat.
