One wounded in Clarkfield standoff
CLARKFIELD — A call for a welfare check on a person in Clarkfield turned into a standoff at a rural residence Saturday, according to the Yellow Medicine County Sheriff’s Office said.
The individual was shot and wounded by SWAT team members, the Sheriff’s Office stated in a news release.
The Sheriff’s Office didn’t release the name of the wounded person. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating the use of force.
Around 3:15 p.m. Saturday, the Sheriff’s Office received a call for a welfare check on an individual in the city of Clarkfield. While deputies were responding, they were notified that the person had left the city and was now in a rural farm field with a rifle, the Sheriff’s Office said.
While deputies evacuated residents from the farmhouse, the person with the rifle pointed the gun at them, and the fled into the house, the Sheriff’s Office said. Deputies were unable to persuade the person to come out of the farmhouse.
Members of the Kandiyohi-Meeker-Willmar SWAT Team were called in to talk to the individual, but the person shot at SWAT team members, the Sheriff’s Office said. A SWAT team member returned fire, hitting the person in the leg, but the standoff continued, the Sheriff’s Office said.
After about eight hours, the Kandiyohi-Meeker-Willmar SWAT Team was relieved by the West Central and Brown-Lyon-Redwood-Renville SWAT teams. Around 6:17 a.m. Sunday, the person left the farmhouse and shot at SWAT Team members, the Sheriff’s Office said. Team members returned fire and shot the person, the Sheriff’s Office said.
The wounded person was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center by air ambulance, and was in stable condition on Sunday, the Sheriff’s Office said. No other people were injured, the Sheriff’s Office said.
