Area cities to observe Veterans Day
Next week, southwest Minnesota residents will honor military veterans with ceremonies, speakers, and even some community meals. In Marshall, Veterans Day observances will include a program Monday morning at the Adult Community Center. The program is open to the public.
The Veterans Day program will start at 10:30 a.m. Guest speakers will include Marshall High School students who attended Boys State, said Bruce Fuhrmann, of the Marshall American Legion post. Local Legion members will also demonstrate how to fold an American flag, and talk about the symbolism of the flag, he said.
Marshall won’t be the only community honoring veterans on Monday. Many area communities will be holding their own Veterans Day observances. There will be programs in the following cities:
Balaton: Breakfast will be provided for all veterans and their immediate family from 8-10 a.m. Monday at Balaton One Stop. The Balaton American Legion post will hold a program at 11 a.m. in the Balaton Community Center. Legion member and Garvin minister Charles Anderson will be the guest speaker.
Canby: A Veterans Day program will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Canby High School. Dan Dybsetter will be the guest speaker.
Cottonwood: A Veterans Day program will be held at 9:30 a.m. Monday in the main gymnasium at Lakeview School.
Currie: The Currie American Legion will open at 11 a.m. on Monday, and veterans can receive a free beverage. A Quilt of Honor presentation will be held at noon, followed by a pot roast meal.
Granite Falls: A Veterans Day program will be held at 2:10 p.m. Monday in the Espeland gymnasium at Yellow Medicine East High School. Drew Brockman will be the guest speaker.
Hendricks : A Veterans Day program will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Hendricks Public School.
Ivanhoe: A Veterans Day program will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Lincoln Elementary. Kevin Leibfried will be the guest speaker.
Lake Benton: A Veterans Day program will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Lake Benton Public School.
Lynd: A Veterans Day program will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Lynd Public School.
Milroy: A Veterans Day program will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Milroy School. Tom Marks will be the guest speaker.
Minneota: A Veterans Day program will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Minneota High School. Senior student James Douglas will be the guest speaker.
Redwood Falls: A Veterans Day program will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the Redwood Valley High School gymnasium. Austin Gunderson will be the guest speaker.
Tracy: A Veterans Day program will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Tracy Area High School. Veterans William Viet, Reid Kimball and William Heern will be honored. Col. Julie Muedeking will be the guest speaker.
At noon, there will be a turkey dinner at the Tracy American Legion club on Fourth Street. People attending are asked to bring a dish to pass.
Tyler: A Veterans Day program will be held at 9:30 a.m. Monday in the Knights competition gym at RTR School.
Westbrook: A Veterans Day program will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Westbrook Walnut Grove High School.
Walnut Grove: A Veterans Day program will be held at 10:15 a.m. Monday at Westbrook Walnut Grove Elementary.
