Coleman, Swanson and Van Moer elected to Marshall School Board
MARSHALL — Matt Coleman, Mary Swanson and Timothy Van Moer have been elected to the Marshall School Board in the election held on Tuesday.
According to unofficial vote totals, Coleman led with 3,861 votes, followed by Swanson with 2,852 and Van Moer with 2,590.
Seats for the school board up for election came from Coleman, the current board chair, along with current directors Bill Swope and Anne Marie Vorbach.
Coleman and Vorbach were nearing the end of their terms and were up for reelection, where Swope will be retiring.
Van Moer is a longtime Marshall resident and attended school here and around the area.
“I’m excited to have the opportunity to take active participation, as we continue to cultivate the growth of the Marshall School District, and strive for the good truth and the beautiful,” Van Moer said. “(Looking forward) to growing as an individual myself, and participating in growing the school district.”
Coleman has been on the board since 2006, and has been serving as the board chair. He has three daughters who all grew up and graduated from Marshall High School. He currently works as a hog procurement manager for Smithfield Foods.
“I want to thank the community of Marshall for the confidence they have in me,” Coleman said. “I look forward to continuing the great things we’re doing at Marshall public schools.”
Swanson is also eager to be elected, and currently has a child attending the high school and one that graduated recently.
“Very excited and honored that some people in Marshall felt that they could put their trust in me to represent them on the school board,” Swanson said. “I just felt very called that it was time for me to get involved with the cohort.”
Swanson currently works as a nursing home administrator for Good Samaritan Society.
“I’m looking forward to joining the board and the other members who obviously are serving currently, and learning from them,” Swanson said. “Then, exploring opportunities that we can secure for the future and really getting involved in the community to get feedback from the community members on what they see in the future of the school district, and opportunities for growth.”
Coleman, Swanson and Van Moer will join other current members including board vice chair Sara Runchey, board clerk Jeff Chapman and board treasurer Sara Brink, in addition to finance treasurer Sarah Kirchner, superintendent Jeremy Williams and assistant Emily Ruppert.
Swope will retire, who served as a Marshall elementary school principal for 28 years, and has been on the board for eight years.
Other candidates running for a seat were Charlotte Wahle and Anne Veldhuisen.
Vorbach was sworn into the board earlier this year in February to finish out Bill Mulso’s terms, which originally ended this year, after he stepped down for another job opportunity.
The three elected members will be sworn into position in January.
