‘My favorite meeting of the month’
School board applauds excelling students recognized by Tiger Spotlight
MARSHALL — In Monday evening’s Marshall School Board meeting, students from each Marshall public school were recognized in November’s session of Tiger Spotlight, which honors select students nominated by educators that are excelling in their studies.
“This is my favorite meeting of the month,” board chair Matt Coleman said. “We get to recognize a student from each building.”
Jose Alfaro Hernandez was nominated by Kari Loft, an English Language Learner teacher at the high school.
“Jose is a 10th grader who has been in the United States for one year after encountering a challenging journey to meet up with family members in Marshall,” Loft said in a presentation presented to the board. “Jose’s English has grown quickly through his hard work and dedication to his classes … Jose is a great classmate who is kind, considerate, helpful, and happy to have this learning opportunity at Marshall High School.”
Liesel Gunderson was nominated by Area Learning Center staff, and was recognized as a caring and compassionate student who shows respect toward peers and faculty, and oftentimes is the highlight of teacher’s day with her positive demeanor.
For Southview Elementary’s nomination, Xia Moua gave Oliver Hoppe the honor.
“Oliver comes to school ready to work every morning. He knows our routine and our expectations in my classroom, and is a great role model for his peers,” Moua said. “He will help out without me even having to ask him … He puts his full effort into his work and makes sure that it is done correctly before putting it away. He’s not afraid to ask questions, and he is not afraid to participate in new activities in class.”
A group of seventh-grade teachers collectively nominated Auberon Ramos Lopez for the middle school.
Lopez was described as making significant growth academically and personally, and acts as a role model to other classmates with his hardworking nature and kindness. He also was mentioned as a natural leader, and recently led a group during a character analysis project and was collaborative and dependable.
For the final nomination, Salman Ahmed was named in this month’s spotlight by Tiffany Lecy at Park Side Elementary.
“His (Ahmed’s) writing has continued to improve throughout this school year. This reflects his dedication to his letter formation and sentence structure,” Lecy said. “He is a sweet boy who is always doing his best and working hard to become an excellent student all around. He enjoys writing and it shows. He comes up with wonderful ideas to share on paper.”
The board plans to continue to host a Tiger Spotlight section and honor district students in meetings every month.
