Three injured in Hwy. 23 crash
RUSSELL — Three people were injured in a crash on Minnesota Highway 23 near Camden State Park on Tuesday. Two pickup trucks collided on the icy road, while they were slowing down due to a prior crash in the area, the Minnesota State Patrol said.
The first crash was reported at 4:52 p.m. A semi truck that was southbound on Highway 23 started to jackknife, and struck a pickup truck that was also southbound, said Sgt. Troy Christianson of the Minnesota State Patrol. Both vehicles ended up in the ditch, but the drivers were uninjured, Christianson said.
A second crash, with injuries, was reported at 5:19 p.m., at the intersection of Highway 23 and Lyon County Road 68. A pickup that was northbound on Highway 23 had slowed down for the first crash, when a southbound pickup spun counterclockwise on the icy road, the State Patrol reported.
The driver and passenger of a 2014 Ram pickup, 59-year-old Jeffrey Paul Carpenter and 58-year-old Sandy Audine Carpenter, both of Lake Benton, were taken to the emergency room in Marshall, the State Patrol said. The driver of a 2002 Ford pickup, 60-year-old Duane Scott Ferguson of Woodstock, was also taken to the Marshall ER, the State Patrol said.
North Memorial Ambulance, Russell Fire and First Responders, and the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office all responded at the crash scene.
