Avera Marshall reports top 10 baby names in 2024

MARSHALL — Grace, Wesley, Ivy and Weston were among the top names for babies born at Avera Marshall Medical Center over the past year. This week, Avera Marshall shared a list of the top 10 most popular names for baby boys and girls born at the hospital in 2024.

At the local level, there wasn’t a lot of overlap between 2024’s top baby names and those from 2023. However, some of the popular names have had a lot of staying power, like Olivia for girls. According to the U.S. Social Security Administration’s website, the name Olivia was the number one most popular name for baby girls in 2023, the most recent year with data available. Olivia has been the top girls’ name in the country since 2019, and it has stayed in the top 10 since 2001, according to SSA data. The SSA’s top male name of 2023, Liam, did not make it into the top 10 at Avera Marshall last year. However, it was among the most popular baby boys’ names across the whole Avera Health service region, which includes parts of Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska and the Dakotas.

Going by SSA rankings, the most popular baby names in the Avera Marshall region are a mix of traditional and new. Some of the names on this year’s list, like Theodore and Henry for boys and Maria and Charlotte for girls, have stayed relatively popular since 1900. Other names have seen more recent popularity. Two popular girls’ names at Avera Marshall, Raelynn and Kinsley, first appeared in the SSA rankings in the 2000s and have gained popularity since then.

Two of the top names for boys born at Avera Marshall, Jordan and Weston, have also become more popular, but over a longer stretch of time. According to the SSA rankings, both names have grown in popularity since the 1960s and 70s.
