Hy-Vee goes back to the Market Grille
Store to close Wahlburgers location, unveil new menu
MARSHALL — Some changes are on the menu for the in-store restaurant at the Marshall Hy-Vee.
The Wahlburgers location will be closing down to bring back the Market Grille restaurant. The switch will mean a new menu, but also the return of some customer favorites, like breakfast hash browns.
“We’re pretty excited,” said Jeff Thompson, Hy-Vee district store director. “They’ve been doing training on the new recipes already this week.”
Last week, Hy-Vee announced that it would be transitioning all its in-store Wahlburgers restaurant locations back to Hy-Vee Market Grille locations. The burger chain’s franchise agreement with Hy-Vee ended, and Wahlburgers would be shifting focus to full-service restaurants, the Minnesota Star Tribune reported last week.
After the transition, the Market Grille will have a new menu that mainly focuses on breakfast and burgers, Hy-Vee said in its announcement. Once the transition is complete, there will be a total of 221 Market Grille and Market Grille Express locations at Hy-Vee stores across the Midwest.
In Marshall, the change to the Market Grille will officially start on Feb. 18, Thompson said. He said the Marshall Hy-Vee was “pretty fortunate,” in that the switch wouldn’t mean major changes to the store’s existing dining area, other than some signage changes.
There will be some items diners can enjoy before Feb. 18, Thompson said. He said hash browns will be back on the menu starting Feb. 4. Senior citizens can also enjoy 99-cent coffee on weekdays, starting Feb. 4.
Being able to order their favorite breakfast foods was a big deal for area customers, Thompson said. He said some diners had stopped coming to Hy-Vee when hash browns were taken off the menu.
“Not everyone is a fan of fried potatoes,” he said.
Thompson said the new Market Grille menu will feature some traditional breakfast options, and lunch and dinner items like hamburgers, sandwiches and salads. But there would also be some unique items, he said. Avocado toast would be on the breakfast menu, and in addition to traditional burgers, there would be options like a mac and cheese burger, a peanut butter burger, and a jalapeño burger.
“We think our customers are going to love it,” Thompson said of the Market Grille’s return. “We’re already starting to hear positive things from customers who have found out about it.”
In its company announcement, Hy-Vee said weekday hours for Market Grille locations would be 6-11 a.m. for breakfast and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. for lunch and dinner. Breakfast will be available from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. on weekends.
