Lyon Co. approves feedlot expansion

MARSHALL — A conditional use permit that came before Lyon County Board on Tuesday might have looked familiar to commissioners, said Lyon County Planning and Zoning Administrator John Biren.

Biren said the permit request was for a new phase in an ongoing expansion at a feedlot in Grandview Township, north of Ghent.

“We acted on the same feedlot here within the last year,” Biren said.

Permit applicant Doug Loyson, of Loyson Farms, was building the expansion in stages, he said.

Commissioners voted to approve the conditional use permit, which would allow the feedlot to build a new confinement barn. The new barn would help the feedlot expand from 995 to 1,990 head of cattle.

Biren said Loyson had previously built a manure storage unit as part of the planned expansion.

The proposed permit had several conditions, including odor offsets, and setbacks between the feedlot and neighboring buildings.

Manure would also need to be applied in accordance with a manure management plan with the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency. Biren said the conditions were the same as when previous stages of the project went before the county board.

Biren said a hearing on the CUP request was held last week, but no neighbors attended to comment or object to the proposal.

Commissioners didn’t voice any objections to the proposal, and approved the CUP.

Starting at $4.38/week.
