Marshall council members sworn in

From left to right, Mayor Bob Byrnes and Marshall City Council members Amanda Schroeder and Amanda Schwartz took the oath of office Tuesday evening. Council member James Lozinski, who was not present at Tuesday’s council meeting, took the oath of office earlier.

MARSHALL — Swearing in newly-elected officials was the first item of business at Tuesday’s Marshall City Council meeting. Mayor Bob Byrnes, and council members Amanda Schroeder and Amanda Schwartz, all took the oath of office.

Council member James Lozinski, who was unable to attend Tuesday’s meeting, took the oath of office earlier, city staff said.

Both Byrnes and Schwartz won in contested city races in November, while Lozinski and Schroeder were re-elected after running unopposed in Marshall’s voting wards 1 and 3.

Byrnes won the mayoral race against challenger Noel Ayala. Byrnes has served as Marshall’s mayor since 1992, and served as a city council member from 1986 to 1992.

Schwartz was elected in Marshall’s Ward 2 voting precinct. Schwartz is a child care provider in Marshall, and has been active in community-led efforts to raise additional funds for a new Marshall aquatic center. She was one of three candidates running in the Ward 2 race, including Marshall business owner Dereck Deutz and Southwest Minnesota State University educator and former city council member David Sturrock.

Another item of business for the council on Tuesday was to choose a president pro tempore, who would lead council meetings and perform the mayor’s duties if the mayor was absent. Council members voted to name Craig Schafer as president pro tempore. Schafer abstained from the vote.

“I really appreciate the council’s support. Thank you very much,” Schafer said.
