Laumann pleads guilty to assault in standoff incident

MARSHALL — The man charged in connection with a police standoff in Marshall last spring has pleaded guilty to first degree assault, Lyon County District Court records said.

Paul Kenneth Laumann, 63, appeared in court Thursday, court records said.

In April, Laumann was charged with attempted murder, first and second degree assault, making terroristic threats and reckless discharge of a firearm. A criminal complaint alleged Laumann fired a gun at a police officer in his home on East Main Street, and later also shot through a window at an officer standing outside.

Laumann was taken into custody after a multi-hour standoff with members of the regional Emergency Response Unit. During that time, traffic on a section of East Main Street was blocked off by law enforcement, and some nearby residents were temporarily evacuated from their homes.

Court records said Laumann pleaded guilty to the first degree assault charges at Thursday’s hearing. The court ordered that a pre-sentencing investigation be completed. A sentencing hearing date was set for May 13.
