Lyon County commissioners asks for more info on funding request
MARSHALL — Lyon County Commissioners received a funding request from a regional nonprofit this week. But there were some uncertainties as to whether the Southwest Initiative Foundation had made its request in time to be included in Lyon County’s 2025 budget.
“If it’s not in the budget, I have a hard time funding it,” said Commissioner Rick Anderson. “It’s going to catch up with us next year.”
After discussion and a break for the county administrator to check his budget files, commissioners tabled the issue until they could contact SWIF.
County Administrator Loren Stomberg said SWIF had made a request for a $5,500 annual appropriation.
“When I received this (request), I was going through the budget, and that appropriation was not part of the budget for 2025,” Stomberg said Tuesday. “I didn’t feel comfortable signing off on the bill without the board knowing about this.”
“I’m asking the board what their wishes are, if we want to grant that appropriation or not,” Stomberg said.
SWIF is a nonprofit that works in areas like economic development, entrepreneurship and child care in the region, Stomberg and Commissioner Rick Anderson said.
“What I’m hearing is that they have done some good for our area,” said Commissioner Gary Crowley.
“SWIF is a great organization. But if we didn’t put it in the budget, I’d have a hard time funding it,” Anderson said. He moved to deny the $5,500 request.
Lyon County did fund an appropriation request from SWIF last year, but it hasn’t always done so over the past 20 years, Stomberg said.
“I think we had told them at some previous meetings that we needed that letter when we got into the budget,” Anderson said.
Stomberg said it was possible he had received a funding request and overlooked it.
“I would like to see if you could find whether you were notified or not,” Crowley said.
Commissioners put discussion of the matter on hold while Stomberg went to check his budget files. Stomberg said he did not see a funding request from SWIF. “Typically, when an organization submits their appropriation, I take it and scan it and put it in that file, and I didn’t see it,” he said. However, he didn’t know for certain if SWIF had submitted a funding request during budgeting, and he just didn’t see it.
After further discussion, Anderson withdrew his motion to deny the funding request. Instead, commissioners asked Stomberg to check with SWIF if they had submitted a funding request earlier.
