Minneota school referendum fails

Voters reject both bonding questions

MINNEOTA — Voters in the Minneota school district rejected a total $24.815 million bonding referendum Tuesday. Unofficial results reported on the Minneota Public Schools Facebook page said a majority of voters responded no to both parts of a two-question referendum.

Minneota Superintendent Scott Monson said that while the outcome of the referendum was disappointing, voters were clear about the direction they wanted the school district to take.

“We had a good turnout,” Monson said. “We definitely had a lot of engagement and discussion.”

The bonding funds the district sought would have gone toward school building updates and potential expansions. The first ballot question sought $11.725 million in bonding for items like a new boiler and updates to the school roof. The second ballot question, which could only pass if the first question also passed, sought $13.09 million on bonding for updates including three new classrooms and other building additions.

Unofficial vote totals said 428 people voted in favor of Question 1, and 442 voted no. On Question 2, 375 people voted yes and 494 voted no.

Monson said the Minneota School Board would meet next week to canvass the votes.

School officials haven’t yet had a chance to discuss what happens now that the referendum has failed.

“The needs aren’t going to go away,” Monson said. Some needs, like a new boiler and roof updates, were important ones for Minneota Public Schools, he said. “We’re going to have to figure out or look at how to address those needs.”

Starting at $4.38/week.
