Storm to dump snow in southwest Minnesota

3-6 inches of snow forecast for Marshall

MARSHALL — Parts of southwest Minnesota are in for wintry weather this weekend, including a chance for several inches of snow, National Weather Service forecasts say.

“It’s going to be a really quick shot of snow,” said meteorologist Jen Hacker, at the NWS office in Sioux Falls. Snowfall is forecast for Friday night into Saturday, with the snow “tapering off pretty quickly” on Saturday, Hacker said.

The Marshall area was forecast to get anywhere from 3 to 6 inches of snow, with deeper accumulations farther north, the NWS said. The heaviest snowfall forecast this weekend is in an area roughly between U.S. Highway 212 and Highway 12, Hacker said.

The snow coming this weekend is likely to be more dry and powdery, so there is a possibility of drifting, the NWS said. However, while the Marshall area experienced gusty winds on Thursday, a wind advisory was set to expire Thursday evening.

Hacker said forecasts in Marshall were for cooler temperatures next week, which means the snow the area does get could stick around a while.

“It’s not going to melt off in a day or two,” she said. Having accumulated snow on the ground also helps keep temperatures cooler, Hacker said.

Daytime high temperatures this weekend are forecast to get to 21 degrees on Sunday. Forecasted high temperatures fall into the single digits by Tuesday and Wednesday.

Starting at $4.38/week.
