Tree cutting work to start along Highway 19 ahead of reconstruction

MARSHALL — Drivers in Marshall should be on the lookout for tree removal crews along Highway 19 beginning in the next couple of weeks, the Minnesota Department of Transportation said Wednesday.

The tree and brush removal will help set the stage for a major reconstruction project planned on Highway 19 starting this year.

Over the next two years, MnDOT plans to reconstruct Highway 19 (College Drive) in Marshall between Marlene Street and the Bruce Street/College Drive intersection.

Some trees will need to be removed in spots along the route where sidewalk or utility updates are needed, said Sandra Schlagel, public engagement coordinator for MnDOT District 8. Some side streets along the route could also potentially be affected, she said.

While the highway reconstruction is planned to be split up over two years, tree removals for the project will all be done this year, Schlagel said. Tree removals are scheduled to be completed by March 31.

MnDOT said drivers on Highway 19 should slow down in the project area, and be alert for workers and heavy equipment. There may be shoulder and lane closures on College Drive during tree cutting.

Flaggers may be present during the cleanup and removal of downed trees.

Tree removals for the Highway 19 project are being scheduled now, to avoid the nesting of northern long-eared bats in spring, MnDOT said.

Trees removed in the project will be replaced in the fall of 2026, MnDOT said.

The Highway 19 project includes reconstruction of the street, sewer and water mains, as well as updating sidewalks. A single-lane roundabout will also be built near the National Guard Armory. The first segment of the construction, from Marlene Street to Main Street, is planned to start this year.

Schlagel said an open house on the Highway 19 reconstruction project will be held April 16 at the Marshall-Lyon County Library.

Starting at $4.38/week.
