Truck goes through ice near Canby
CANBY — The driver of a truck that went through the ice on Del Clark Lake on Sunday was able to escape the vehicle safely, the Yellow Medicine County Sheriff’s Office said.
Around 8:50 a.m. Sunday, the vehicle broke through the ice on Del Clark Lake, near Canby. The driver was able to exit the vehicle and return to his group without injuries, the Sheriff’s Office said. The truck settled in about 30 feet of water. Recovery efforts are being coordinated, the Sheriff’s Office said.
Preliminary investigations suggested that the ice at the location of the accident had been weakened by recent warm weather, the Sheriff’s Office said.
The Sheriff’s Office said no ice is ever completely safe, and the public was urged to use “extreme caution” when going out on frozen lakes.
A little over a week before the accident, hundreds of people gathered on Del Clark Lake for an ice fishing tournament.
