MARSHALL — The Marshall school board held an impromptu Tiger Spotlight session at Monday night’s board meeting to honor a pair of custodians that showed school pride and dedication in their line of work recently.

Tiger Spotlight is typically held once a month to recognize a student from each Marshall public school for their hard work and academic success. However, high school custodians Rodney Bomgaars and Terry Fisher earned themselves the honor after locating a student’s phone in a school dumpster a few weeks ago.

“We all have those moments in our jobs where something happens that we aren’t really excited about, but these two went way above and beyond the other day at the high school,” superintendent Jeremy Williams said.

High school principal Brian Jones sent an email to the district office letting them know what Bomgaars and Fisher did, and Williams and Director of Operations Tricia Stelter agreed the two should be applauded for what they did.

“Terry and Rodney continue to go above and beyond to support our students and staff,” Stelter said. “It was evident that these two are models of our mission statement to educate, support and prepare all learners for success.”

Jones sent in an email to Stelter detailing his respect for the two, which was read at the meeting.

“I appreciate Terry and Rodney. Yesterday, we had a student lose their phone. They and their parents were quite upset and frustrated. The student came in this morning and said that it was showing it was near the loading dock,” Jones said in the email. “They had to play a tone and they could hear it coming from the dumpster. Terry and Rodney went through the dumpster and found the bag that the noise was coming from. They then went through the garbage to return her phone to her.”

Bomgaars and Fisher thanked the board when receiving their certificates, and appreciated the recognition.

“Terry and Rodney, in your line of work, you support our staff and our students every day, but it looks different,” Jones said. “I want to thank you for showing your willingness and doing it with a gracious smile on your face. Marshall Public Schools is lucky to have you.”
