Lyon Co. Board moves forward on SWIF funding

MARSHALL — Lyon County commissioners approved a 2025 funding appropriation for a regional nonprofit this week. However, the Southwest Initiative Foundation would not be receiving the full $5,500 it had asked for.

After doing some further checking on the county’s 2025 budget, Lyon County Administrator Loren Stomberg said there actually had been $5,000 appropriated in the budget for SWIF. The funds had been included in a different part of the budget than Stomberg thought.

“I did find where we had appropriated $5,000, that was in the culture fund,” Stomberg said at Tuesday’s county board meeting. “For whatever reason, I was under the impression that it was in the economic development (fund). One way or the other, that’s on me.”

The funding request from SWIF had first come before the commissioners at a February meeting, but commissioners put discussion of it on hold while Stomberg gathered more information.

SWIF is a regional nonprofit that works in areas including economic development, entrepreneurship and child care.

“We did roll over a $5,000 appropriation from 2024 into the 2025 budget,” for SWIF, Stomberg said. Tuesday. However, the request SWIF gave the county was for 10% more, at $5,500.

“Normally when the appropriations are approved, the numbers match, we send the money out, it’s a done deal,” Stomberg told commissioners. “I’m just wondering how the board wants to handle it, if there’s a concern over the extra $500, or we just want to go with the amount that was approved.”

“I think SWIF does some good things,” said Commissioner Rick Anderson. But he moved that the county approve the $5,000 that was originally budgeted for the organization.

“Going forward, I think this is probably an item that we might want to take a hard look at for our next budget,” said Commissioner Gary Crowley.

“Five thousand dollars isn’t going to be a big amount to cut. But yes, I agree,” Anderson said.

Commissioners voted to approve the $5,000 in funding that was budgeted for 2025.

Starting at $4.38/week.
