Lyon County DFL elects officers

MARSHALL — Members of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party in Lyon County met for their annual county convention Monday night. DFL members chose new county officers, who included a mix of returning officers and people new to officer positions.

Anita Gaul was re-elected as chair of the Lyon County DFL and Beth Collins was elected vice chair.

Gaul estimated that about 35 people attended this year’s county convention. The county convention tends to be more “low-key” in years when there isn’t a general election, she said. Voting for new county officers and a new board of directors were some of the main items of business.

In addition to Gaul returning as county chair, another returning officer, Tim Buysse, was elected as treasurer. Collins was elected vice chair, Michelle Larsen was elected secretary, and Cathy Schlagel was elected as outreach officer.

Gaul said DFL members also heard from two guest speakers. Laura Schmig of the Southwest Minnesota State University College Democrats spoke about the club’s activities. Quentin Wathum-Ocama, who is running for outreach officer of the Minnesota DFL, also spoke about his candidacy and answered questions.

Officer elections for the Minnesota DFL will be held March 29, Gaul said.

The DFL Convention for Minnesota Senate District 15 is coming up this weekend, at the Wood Lake Community Center in Wood Lake. Senate District 15 includes Yellow Medicine, Lyon, Lac qui Parle, Brown and Redwood counties, as well as part of Blue Earth county.

The convention will begin at 10 a.m., with Minnesota Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan scheduled to speak at 11 a.m.

Starting at $4.38/week.
