Let the good times roll
You know something? There are times when you need to, “Laisse les bons temps rouler!”
During one period of my life, I spent time in southern Louisiana. We were there for about 18 months while I was attending the University of Southwestern Louisiana (now named University of Louisiana-Lafayette). With full time schooling and a part time job, there wasn’t mush time for having fun, but I definitely felt the vibe of the Creole culture.
I had the opportunity to do primary research at the personal desk of the founder of McIlhenny Company located on Avery Island. This man produced the rather tasty and very hot sauce called Tabasco Pepper Sauce. It will definitely spice you up for all the good times!
The Louisiana French Creole culture provides fantastically delicious foods. Their celebrations — like Mardi Gras — are jaw dropping for an upright Northern Scandinavian like myself. But, oh, so much fun!
It was during this southern immersion when I learned the true meaning of “Laisse les bons temps rouler” — let the good times roll! And boy, did the good times roll!
When you get a chance, research the history of the Cajuns — the Louisiana Acadians. It is very interesting — a history of displacement, adjustment, persecution and resilience.
The culture features outstanding cuisine, and some rather tasty cocktails. The classic cocktail is a Sazerac. The drinks ingredients include rye whiskey, absinthe, a sugar cube and a dash of Peychaud’s bitters. Of course, anything goes in Creole country, so just enjoy the climate.
Speaking of climate, don’t forget it can be hotter than “Enfers” ( Hades ), and more humid than the tropics. I’ll never forget walking with my special one and seeing bunches of cockroaches run in front of us. Oh well, maybe they were just letting the good times roll, too!
Don’t forget to have a beignet while visiting New Orleans. It can bring you to the point of laisse les bons temps rouler.
What does this have to do with wine? Not much I guess. For the fun of it, let’s just call this rendering a walk down memory lane.
We might not have the opportunity to celebrate Mardi Gras in the manner of those Louisianians, but we can always party with family and friends.
During this time of societal upheaval and uncertainty, we deserve and need to share some goodness and kindness with others. So, my friends, let the good times roll!
Laisse les bons temps rouler!
As always, eat and drink in moderation but laugh with reckless abandon!
Cheers!
