Amy Marie Scharfe was born Sept. 13, 1948, in Minneapolis. She was the daughter of Ervin and Adeline Radke Scharfe. Amy grew up near Lucan, and was baptized at the Johnsonville Lutheran Church and later confirmed at the Ellsborough Lutheran Church. She completed her education, graduating from Lake Wilson High School in 1966. Amy then went to the Twin Cities to work for a period before returning to Balaton.

Amy worked briefly as a secretary in Marshall before staying home with her two sons, Josh and Nick.
