Leona Sawchak

MARSHALL — A memorial service for Leona Sawchak, 90, will be 10 a.m. Friday at the Horvath Remembrance Center in Marshall. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Marshall. A recording of the service will be available later at www.horvathfuneralservice.com.

Leona passed away peacefully May 10, 2023, with her family lovingly by her side.

Leona was born Sept. 28, 1932, in Ihlen, to Frank and Alvina Reimers. She attended school in Ihlen, graduated and moved with a friend to Minneapolis. On a trip to Macon, GA, she met her husband, John. They were married in 1949 and were together for 45 years. John’s military career moved them to different areas including Japan and Spain. Together they had 5 children. John, Mike, Steve, Tom and Maria. After John retired, they settled in Marshall, where Leona worked as a CNA at a local nursing home. John passed away in 1994 and Leona decided to move closer to her daughter in Rapid City, SD. She enjoyed traveling to visit her sons and loved vacations with her daughter, cooking family favorites or going out to dinner. Leona was happiest when surrounded by family and always put them first. Her grandchildren were her greatest treasure…She was kind, loving and generous. Her bright blue eyes and warm smile lit up the room. As long as her family was near, she was happy. Her family grieves her loss but take comfort in knowing that she is with her husband again.

Survivors include, sons, John of Scranton, PA, Mike (Donna) of Naugatuck, CT, Steve (Sharon) of Pittsboro, NC, Tom of Marshall, daughter Maria (Travis) of Rapid City, SD, 7 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren, brother Bill (Marge) of Stewartville.

She is preceded in death by her husband, parents, three brothers and sister.
