Phyllis Ione Baumann was born on a warm summer day on August 19, 1931, in Slayton, Minnesota. She was the daughter of Rudolph and Elsie (Storm) Schmidt.
Phyllis led a life filled with compassion, and dedication to others. Her journey of selflessness began after graduating from Slayton High School in 1949 and pursuing Normal Training in Lamberton, Minnesota. This path she chose would eventually shape her into the remarkable individual many came to know. On June 13, 1951, Phyllis was united in marriage to Donald Baumann and the couple spent nearly 30 years of marriage together before his death in 1981.
Phyllis dedicated her early years to nurturing young minds as a teacher at a country school. She later transitioned to Woolworth’s in Marshall before embracing her role as a devoted mother and homemaker. Her warmth extended beyond her family as she worked in the kitchen at Marshall High School. Phyllis eventually made her way to Norwest Bank in Marshall for many years before her retirement in 1999. Even then, her love for educating others did not wane, as she came full circle to substitute teach and help students as a paraprofessional until the age of 83.
Phyllis found solace in simple pleasures such as taking leisurely walks and caring for her home. She humbly served various roles within her church community, notably as a Deacon. Phyllis served again by providing meals at Esther’s Kitchen, exemplifying her generosity towards others.
Phyllis Baumann died peacefully on Wednesday, March 6, 2024, at her home. She had reached the age of 92 years, 6 months, and 16 days. Blessed be her memory.
She leaves behind a legacy of love – survived by her son, Al (and Jolene) Baumann of Loveland, CO; daughter, Sharon Schwantes of Hutchinson; 3 grandchildren, Niki (and Zach) Kamerzell of Loveland, CO, Tyler (and Heidi) Schwantes of Bismark, ND, Traci (Jared) Sims of Babcock Ranch, FL; 3 great-grandchildren, Reilly Kamerzell, Scarlet Schwantes, Lucas Schwantes, and another great-grandchild soon to be welcomed into this world; nieces, nephews, other relatives near and far, and friends.
