SUN CITY WEST AZ — Robert Spencer Mann passed away peacefully February 25, 2024, in Sun City West, AZ. He was blessed to be surrounded by family during his last days.
Robert and his twin brother Richard were born February 10, 1937, at Sutter Hospital in San Francisco, CA to Annette Barton and Sidney Spencer Mann. Living in several neighborhoods throughout the city, Robert graduated from Polytechnic High School and enlisted in the US Army in early 1955.
Serving as a Medical Aidman and member of the 101st Airborne, Robert left the service to play football in Washington. In 1959, he fractured two vertebrae on the field and had to endure a long recovery. That moment changed his and Richard’s lives forever. Richard selflessly gave up the medical school path he was on to support Robert during his rehabilitation. Robert’s recovery was complete when he visited Richard on assignment with the State Department in Germany and met the love of his life Janice Morey.
Married in 1963 at First Lutheran Church Marshall, MN. The couple moved to San Francisco where Robert began his career at The Emporium as a buyer. After adopting two children, the family moved north to Marinwood, CA then again to Novato, CA. Robert was offered a position at Cost Plus Imports and became the General Manager. Expanding the retailer’s footprint throughout California, gaining the respect of his coworkers and competitors alike. In 1984, Robert changed direction again buying Tiburon Hardware in Tiburon, CA.
1996 brought Robert and Jan to Marshall, MN after the loss of his mother-in-law where Robert was able to provide financial planning services both compensated and through volunteer opportunities. They enjoyed traveling, friends and their grandchildren moving through retirement.
Throughout his life, Robert dedicated himself, his family, and his talents to his churches Good Shepherd Lutheran in Novato CA and First Lutheran in Marshall, MN. Robert served as church president, council member, numerous committees and constant men’s workday breakfast and volunteer. Robert always had time and effort for others. His integrity, leadership and engaging personality will be missed by all that knew him.
Robert and his family greatly appreciate all the heartfelt care he received from his health care team. The amount of passion and commitment you brought to Robert’s final journey was as valuable to his family as it was to Robert himself.
Robert was preceded in death by his father Sidney Spencer Mann and stepmother Margorie Mann, his mother Annette Barton and stepfather Robert Heyworth. His brother Richard Sydney Mann passed away in 1996 and Robert missed him every day. He is survived by his wife Janice Mann. Children, Christopher Mann (Jacqueline) and Melissa Mann.
