George “Davis” Holcomb
George “Davis” Holcomb, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on October 29, 2024, at the age of 93. Born near Bragg City, Missouri, to James L. and Minnie C. Holcomb, George spent his early years on the family farm, working the cotton and soybean fields. His work ethic, forged in the heat of those long days spent hoeing and picking cotton, was something he carried with him throughout his life. Despite the grueling nature of farm life during this time, George was determined to break free and build a life of opportunity beyond the fields.
A 1949 graduate of Bragg City High School, George’s educational journey led him to Arkansas State College for one year before enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1950, following the outbreak of the Korean War. He proudly served in Germany from 1952 to 1953. Upon his return, George married the love of his life, LaVonne Julson, on November 28, 1953.
After a brief stint working in the automotive industry in Pontiac, Michigan, George returned to college, earning both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Soil Science from the University of Minnesota. Shortly after graduating, George moved his family to Marshall in 1959 where he was employed by the University of Minnesota as a resource person for the county extension agents in a ten county area in southwestern Minnesota. His professional career was dedicated to improving agricultural practices and educating others. He worked with area residents, local governing bodies, state and federal agencies and legislators regarding drainage and flooding problems. Conducting educational programs, his expertise led to the formation of three watershed districts and he played a pivotal role in drafting management plans for the Yellow Medicine River Watershed District.
George retired in 1982, following a severe heart attack. Doctors called him a walking miracle due to his ability to keep bouncing back and be active after health complications over the years. In retirement, he cherished time spent with his family and friends, as well as his favorite hobbies–playing billiards, enjoying card games, and fishing. Whether it was pulling up to a secluded lakeshore to enjoy a fresh catch or exploring the great outdoors with loved ones, George always found joy in life’s simple pleasures.
George is survived by his devoted wife, LaVonne, his children, Gary (Silvet), Bakersfield, CA, Jeff (Anne), Mesa, AZ, Richard (Somjai) Colorado Springs, CO, and Duane, Phoenix, AZ; His grandchildren, Brittinni (Nick), Braden (Olivia), Breha (Andy), Angie (James), Jessica(Mike) and Sultana, 10 great grandchildren, and many dear friends who will miss his wisdom and kindness.
